On the Ascendant: Moon Rising

This post is the first in an occasional series on the Ascendant in your horoscope.

Contradictions- that’s what this aspect is all about.

The moon conjunct ascendant is a sign of emotional tension in a person; longing to be close to people, but keeping them at arm’s length out of fear. Distant and reserved on the surface, but burning to be social and feel included in life. People with the moon on the ascendant wear their heart on their sleeve and yet will hold back from any emotional demonstrations until they really sense the other person feels the same way(whether in romance, friendship, or simply mutual admiration). They are wildly imaginative and still often critical of people who dare to stimulate their flights of fancy.

The ascendant is the doorway between our inner selves and the outer world, so when a planet is in that range, it colors everything we see. The moon rising soul yearns for someone to really get them; someone who understands what they are all about on the inside. But the barriers they erect to protect that soft heart make it tough for those people to get through to them.

Since we’re talking about the moon, it’s easy to see the echoes of the water signs in this description; Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are all notorious on some level for erecting that concrete wall to protect their sensitive insides- sometimes so much that people would never guess at their true nature (did you know Chuck Norris is a Pisces? With moon rising? No wonder he’s become the internet’s badass poster child. And that he’s a little defensive about it).

The moon on the ascendant often brings some interesting physical features as well. Moon rising folks often have eyes that turn down a little at the outer corners, a rounder, fuller face or cheeks, and a captivating gaze when they are willing to look you straight in the eye. In women, this aspect can also be a sign of greater emphasis on the… chestal region; more full moon symbolism there!
