March is audiobook month here at Signs of Potential – I didn’t set out to only listen to recordings this month, but every piece I’ve spent any time with this month was a digital file. So grab your headphones and read on:
Bedtime Stories, by Clarissa Pinkola Estés
This is a digital audio download I bought on a whim from Amazon late one night. The Amazon MP3 auto-downloader has proven to be an extremely dangerous late-night snack! Bedtime Stories is an album of nine tracks: an introduction and eight stories. Admittedly, I’ve never made it past the third track, so I can attest that it works! Her reading voice is also great so I highly recommend this. It’s only seven dollars and worth it.
Discovering Your True Purpose, by Eckhart Tolle
Another MP3 download. It’s a recording (two tracks) of a talk the author gave to a large audience, and while it’s interesting it’s hard for me to follow its not-so-linear format. I need to come back to it when I’m in a less methodical frame of mind. He is quite personable and an interesting speaker, and has an enormous fan base so the material speaks to a lot of people. This one I was lured to by the under-two-dollar price, so I’m still content with it being in my library. I’ll give it another go in a little while.
Energetic Boundaries, by Karla McLaren
This is a large audio course from Sounds True, the people who bring you lots of other woowoo audio courses. The full title is Energetic Boundaries: Practical Protection and Renewal Skills for Healers, Therapists, and Sensitive People. And it is exactly that- practical. This set is six CDs of material, progressing from basic self-care routines and different elemental systems to creating rituals and working with energy constructively. The author’s style is conversational and friendly, but still confident and helpful. Warning: I skip the musical intros on each disc because they’re waaay too woo for me, but that doesn’t lessen the magnitude of the material that follows. I bought it because it was on clearance, but after listening to it I feel that it is worth every penny of the regular price. If you are a sensitive/intuitive person but have that methodical earthy side, and are at all intrigued by this, get it. If you like overviews of a topic rather than thorough explanations, your mileage may vary. I have the hard copy but there is an MP3 download as well for half the price.
Women Who Run With The Wolves, by Clarissa Pinkola Estés
Dr. Estés is such a great storyteller that I’ll buy any of her audios now just to hear her talk. She’s a Jungian analyst by training, and the subtitle of this is Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype. The format is a story, followed by a breakdown of the undercurrents and implications of the story. She also quips about something she calls the “mistaken zygote theory”, which I found interesting and will revisit later. There are two tracks so for $1.78 you get almost two and a half hours of tales. Great for plugging into your iPod to keep your brain moving while you do something else, or relaxing into a chair and just listening to it.
