Ask the Astrologer #3 – Ascendants

Every Thursday, I answer astrology questions I’ve received through email or the search bar. If you have a question, contact me and yours might be featured next!

Can your rising sign override your sun sign?

Your rising sign doesn’t override your sun sign, but since it tends to be the energy people pick up on from you first it can seem like an override to other people. If your rising sign is very different in nature from your sun or moon sign, it can pick up extra emphasis just due to the contrast.

For example, a person who is a Leo Sun and a Sagittarius rising will project consistent fire element qualities even though the two signs are different. By contrast, a person who is a Leo Sun and a Scorpio rising will have their Leo energy filtered through the Scorpio ascendant first. People with contrasting Sun/rising signs will often be told things like, “Really, you’re a Leo? I never would have guessed… you don’t seem like a Leo.”

This isn’t because the rising sign is overriding the sun sign, but because it’s the top layer of the person’s energy and thus often gets more public exposure.

What are ascendant face features?

Since your ascendant is the filter through which you send and receive information, and the first house relates to physical appearance, your rising sign and any planets on the ascendant do have some effect on your appearance. In my early post about Moon on the Ascendant there is a photo comparison showing some similar characteristics between different people.

One way to get a better feel for this is to take a look at the Astrofaces site- this web site is a great project that is aggregating photos and sorting them by Sun, Moon, and rising sign to show similarities between people.
