Just One Card: Six of Cups

Happy equinox! Tonight at 8:09pm the sun enters the sign of Libra, and the new season officially begins. The astrological year begins with the spring equinox in March, so we are at the midpoint of our annual trip through the zodiac. You can think of today as the sunset of the year, or perhaps as the full moon of the year- we have expanded to fullness, and now it is time to refine and consolidate.

The Six of Cups relates to emotional satisfaction, and happiness. “Six” cards are at the peak of the story told by their suit; the story of Cups is one of love, growth, and maturity. The Six of Cups tells of a well-rounded happiness with the current state of life, after periods of naivete, excitement, and disappointment. From this we have to move forward into refining what we have decided we want.

Three things to think about, as we hit the halfway point of our year:

  • An important part of happiness is alchemy: learning to blend things that don’t naturally come together on their own. What parts of your life aren’t fitting together so well right now? What mix will make you happiest? It’s Libra season now, so it is a good time for reconciling the gaps between where we are and where we want to be. Need more music in your day? Fewer chores on weekends? Maybe you can don headphones while you fold laundry on a Thursday. Get creative in combining the things you want.
  • Are you getting enough time to yourself, or are you hiding away too much? When you retreat, are you giving yourself a chance to recharge before you head back out into the world? Ask yourself what you need right now, and then listen to the answer.
  • Libra’s shadow side involves difficulty in establishing a strong sense of self, and trouble forming strong boundaries. Where do you let other people infringe on your personal sovereignty? In what areas do you allow yourself to be different, regardless of what other people think?

Happiness passes from moment to moment; you can be happy this minute, right now.

Thanks Jo. They’ve been interesting to write, so I’m glad you’re enjoying them.

It’s funny… I had already written that first part about the equinox, and when I drew that card it fit right in. That sort of thing happens all the time, and every time it still astounds me.
