The moon is in Pisces all day today, and our minds are flying after an early-morning trine between Mercury and Neptune. This is a good day to let your mind wander a bit, and follow along behind instead of telling it where to go.
The High Priestess card is connected to the moon. As one of the first cards in the tarot deck, it represents one of the most primal archetypes– our inner life, our subconscious, and the secrets we keep (from others and from ourselves).
She sits on a throne, wearing a crown of the moon phases and a robe that drapes over a crescent. Under her arm she conceals a scroll of wisdom, as she sits between two pillars of polarity– black and white, yin and yang, light and darkness. Behind her is a tapestry of pomegranates, an ancient fertility symbol. This card is about the quiet pause before action, about inner needs and resources, and about potential.
Since Venus is retrograde, right now we are being prompted to dig into our subconscious a little more, to find what it is that we want, and to be brave enough to choose what we actually want instead of what we think we should want.
Some things to think about:
- Make room for the alchemy. The subconscious is a realm of mystery, and a bit of magic. Just because things don’t seem to go together doesn’t mean they won’t: one of the best gifts your inner mind can give you is to blend two mismatched things in a way that makes them both work. You need a routine, but you hate setting schedules? Maybe using a moon calendar will give you variety and structure. Need a lot of alone time, but feeling lonely? Maybe working around (but not with) other people will help. Or maybe it’s a good time for a silent retreat?
- “I have a mind, but I am not the mind.” I got this saying from a meditation teacher. It’s easy to get caught up in worry and random thoughts, and before you know it you’re off down a road of tangents and can’t remember where you started. You can leave your mind to do its thing, like a pot simmering on a stove. Let it bubble away; you aren’t going very far, just over here to sit with your inner self. Your brain-soup will still be on the stove when you get back. It doesn’t always have to interfere while you’re listening to your inner needs.
- It’s ok to be not-quite-there-yet. Big changes are, well… big. They take a lot of time and energy and nurturing, and sometimes we resist making changes when we instinctively know we don’t yet have the resources we need to do them right. But just because you’re not ready to do that one thing yet, doesn’t mean you never will or that there’s something wrong with you because you haven’t just done it already for crying out loud. Your subconscious is protective of you. Sometimes it’s overprotective, which is its own discussion, but it really is trying its best to look out for you. Don’t be too hard on the part of yourself that is trying to keep you from getting hurt or overwhelmed.
